IT'S A DITCH OF A ROAD!

Horns blaring, angry motorists shouting, traffic backed up, cars practically scraping together as they try to pass each other on the too-narrow road, some falling into a ditch . . . what's going on here?

It's only the heavily-travelled access road to the newly-open Kokkini ramps, which runs a couple of hundred meters from the main street to the new National road.

The road is even made narrower, and much more treacherous, due to the open ditch running alongside, which, more than a year ago, the township promised to repair.

Following mounting complaints from motorists, and resident that live on that street, The Khronicles contacted Gouves vice-mayor Yiorgo Merambeliotaki. Following is his statement:

"The municipality was ready to begin constructing a drainage pipe for rain waters, all along the length of the road where a dangerous ditch exists now for many years. However, with the closing of the Kako Oros road so suddenly some months ago, and without any previous warning to any one, the demos thought it prudent to not bog down traffic any further by closing down for any length of time this well traveled access to the Kokkini ramps.

"However, with the Kako Oros soon becoming accessible again (by the end of June), the municipality will build the pipe and cover it with a grille, finally making it functional and safe for all. And it will all be done before August is out."
