FISHERMAN'S SECRETS

By Manolis Poulakis

Where Are The Fish?

Over the recent holiday weekend, I had the chance to go around with my rubber dingy so I went to the rocky island across from Plaka, and would like to comment about the lack of fish.

During those three days, I spent many hours with my son in the sea, exploring the deep. Only one word could characterize what I witnessed. Disappointing!

Certainly the reasons are many. Firstly, it's over fishing which began with the end of World War II, during which fishing fleets were destroyed, resulting in many nations to begin from zero. They unified all the new technological progressions that were made during the war such as sonar, and applied them to fishing. The change of climatic conditions then followed. Now, the problem has been magnified in the ecosystem with the melting of ice, the rise of temperature and certainly, we cannot overlook pollution.

Sewage from homes and businesses, as well as chloride from thousands of swimming-pools that certain unprincipled people illegally dump in the sea, bring a big share of responsibility for the destruction.

Finally, I would like to point out one more reason, which is perhaps the most basic. A lack of measures. With bitterness, I realise that those who govern us turn a blind eye. Not one official from the appropriate institutions, ministries or port authorities is the least bit sensitive about this matter. Perhaps they will wake-up when the fish are absent from their table.

But then it will be too late!
