Dear Editor:

I was stationed at the American Base from 9 December 1968 through 10 August 1971.
Last year I had the distinct pleasure to return to beautiful Crete for a three month visit.
I visited the old Base, and I drove through Hersonissos and Malia.
I was amazed at the amount of growth that has taken place in the last 40 years!
I intend to return to Crete again this year for another three -month visit. I absolutely LOVE Crete and the Cretan people!!!
I read The Khronicles every time a new issue comes out on the internet. Congratulations on three successful years!
I hope The Khronicles has many more successful years of bringing news and wonderful articles to all of us!

SOMEONE PLEASE SAVE US!!!

Malia has been my home now for the best part of 10 years. Love or hate it, you would have to agree that now is the time for change or all will be lost!
In the current economic crisis we need a strong leader who will make Malia a place for tourists to come on their holidays, enjoy their time here and advise others to come and do the same!
I could rant here for hours as the bad things happening to this town are not getting any better! Our lives, families and businesses are suffering in the hands of this mayor who seems hell-bent on destroying a town for the worse! One rule, it seems it is not the same for everyone. Fairness is not on his agenda!
He closes the same bars every year for having three tickets, despite other bars that also have been given tickets being allowed to stay open. Malia is a small town but thousands descend on its streets looking for fun and the bars and clubs cater for this. Therefore they will get drunk, will do stupid things and will probably regret it the morning after.
If they want a change of clientele for Malia, they have chosen the wrong town to bring an upper class of tourists to. This resort was built for English tourism but needs a person who understands its needs better.

As a local resident, your views on the Malia situation are very much appreciated. We've been giving extensive coverage to the continuing degradation of the town, and already this year, although the season has just begun, there have been numerous cases of outrageous drunken behaviour and even serious crimes. As reported, local law officials are saying they will clamp down on the lawbreakers, but time will tell. Meanwhile, it's important for local citizens like yourself to stand up and be counted and to let the Malia Township and the Iraklion Prefecture know that you're sick and you're not going to take it anymore.

ΚΑΠΟΙΟΣ ΠΑΡΑΚΑΛΩ ΝΑ ΜΑΣ ΣΩΣΕΙ!!!

Τα Μάλια είναι το σπίτι μου για 10 χρόνια τώρα. Αγαπώντας ή μισώντας το, θα πρέπει να συμφωνήσετε ότι τώρα είναι ώρα για αλλαγή ή αλλιώς όλα θα χαθούν!

Στην παρούσα οικονομική κρίση χρειαζόμαστε ένα ισχυρό καθοδηγητή που θα κάνει τα Μάλια ένα προορισμό για τουρίστες να περάσουν καλά, και να συμβουλεύσουν άλλους να έρθουν και να κάνουν το ίδιο!

Θα μπορούσα να λέω μεγάλες κουβέντες καθώς τα άσχημα πράγματα που συμβαίνουν  σ' αυτή την πόλη δεν βελτιώνονται! Οι ζωές μας, οι οικογένειες και οι επιχειρήσεις υποφέρουν στα χέρια αυτού του δημάρχου που φαίνεται αμετάπειστος στην καταστροφή μιας πόλης! Δεν εφαρμόζει τον ίδιο κανόνα για όλους. Η δικαιοσύνη δεν περιλαμβάνεται στην ημερήσια διάταξη του!

Κλείνει τα ίδια μπαρ κάθε χρόνο για την κατοχή τριών προστίμων, μολονότι άλλα μπαρ που έχουν επίσης τρία πρόστιμα, επιτρέπεται να είναι ανοιχτά. Τα Μάλια είναι μια μικρή πόλη αλλά χιλιάδες ανθρώπων κατεβαίνουν στους δρόμους, γυρεύοντας να διασκεδάσουν και τα μπαρ και τα κλαμπ φροντίζουν γι'αυτό. Επομένως θα μεθύσουν, θα κάνουν ανοησίες και πιθανόν θα το μετανιώσουν το επόμενο πρωί.

Αν θέλουν μια αλλαγή στην πελατεία των Μαλίων, έχουν επιλέξει τη λάθος πόλη για να φέρουν μια ανώτερη τάξη πελατών. Το θέρετρο αυτό έγινε για τον τουρισμό της Αγγλίας αλλά χρειάζεται ένα άνθρωπο που καταλαβαίνει τις ανάγκες του περισσότερο.

Σαν τοπικός κάτοικος, οι απόψεις σας για την κατάσταση των Μαλίων εκτιμώνται. Έχουμε καλύψει εκτενώς τη συνεχιζόμενη κατάσταση της πόλης, και ήδη αυτή τη χρονιά, παρόλο που μόλις τώρα ξεκίνησε η σαιζόν, έχουν πολλές περιπτώσεις μεθυσμένων με προσβλητική συμπεριφορά, ακόμα και σοβαρά εγκλήματα.  Όπως αναφέρεται, η τοπική αυτοδιοίκηση λέει ότι θα πατάξει την παρανομία, αλλά ο χρόνος θα δείξει. Εντωμεταξύ, είναι σημαντικό για τους ντόπιους κατοίκους όπως εσείς να σταθείτε και να μετρηθείτε και να αφήσετε το δήμο Μαλίων και την περιφέρεια Ηρακλείου να ξέρουν ότι δεν αντέχετε πια.
