Local Football:

Pavlos Moraitakis is a twenty-two year old striker, who plays for the Anopoli team, Diagoras. He has been a member of the team since the age of sixteen, and has always been an excellent goal scorer. His ambition is to improve his form and score even more goals next season, and he wants to stay with Thiagoras unless a bigger team contacts him. This past season, Pavlos scored 27 goals, making him the highest goal scorer in his division. This helped Thiagoras to finish in fourth place in the league, allowing it to be promoted to Division A2, along with PAO Gouves and Romanos from Elia. Pavlos thinks that with the new coach, Stavros Trandalithis, and incoming new players, Thiagoras will be a team pushing for promotion again. Good luck to Thiagoras and all the other local teams for next season.

Mediterranean Games:

The central Greek cities of Volos and Larissa have been awarded the Mediterranean Games for 2013 after beating off a strong challenge from the Croatian city of Rijeka. These games are known as the Olympic Games' lesser-known cousin, but they are overseen by the International Olympic Committee and have been held every four years since 1951. They involve over 20 countries from three continents and are being held at the moment in Pescara, Italy and will go on until July 5.

Basketball:

Panathinaikos retained the A1 League title to make it their seventh consecutive championship after beating Olympiakos 94-81. They have also won the Greek Cup and the Euroleague this season.

Basketball World Championship:

The Greek national team will be facing the USA in the run up to the World Basketball Championship to be held in Turkey from August 28 to September 12, 2010. The cream of American basketball players will come to Athens next August just before the actual championships to play two friendly games with Greece.

Football:

The Greek Under-21 team defeated Lithuania 1-0 thanks to the goal scored by Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Greece now has two wins in as many games in their European Championship qualifying group and their next match is at home against England on September 8.

56th Acropolis Rally:

A fantastic result in the production car category for Lambos Athanasoulas, a man who had not driven a racing car since the 2008 edition of the same event, along with Nikolaos Zakheos to win in his home town of Loutraki. Even with engine problems, he drove the car to victory. "It’s a dream come true," Athanasoulas said in the winner's circle.

Athletics:

Long jumper Louis Tsatoumas came in second at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Berlin. The Greek champion jumped 8.15 metres. He was beaten by South Africa's Godfrey Mokoena who jumped 8.33 metres. Now Tsatoumas is looking forward to the upcoming World Championships this August, again in Berlin.
