SMOKERS' HOTLINE
LIVES UP TO NAME

A special hotline providing info on the new no smoking laws became so "hot" it practically burst into flames, according to officials.

Open to questions from both business owners and individuals, the hotline was jammed with more than 10,000 calls a day when it opened last month. About 80 percent were business owners who were unclear about the restrictions with regards to their particular establishments, and, at the same time, numerous complaints were made about alleged violations.

Health Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos stressed that despite failed attempts to impose similar controls in the past, the new regulations would be strictly enforced.

"It is the first time that this measure will be implemented, to end the myth that we make laws we do not respect, today Greece turns the page," he said. "If these laws are not respected the government will introduce even stricter laws such, as the blanket bans on smoking in all closed public places, like the ones which are enforced in Britain and France."

With bars and restaurants smaller than 70 square metres being able to choose between smoking or non-smoking, early reports show that an overwhelming majority are keeping their doors open for smokers.
