EDITORIAL

Just say YES.

With all the negative Malia stories we’ve had to endure, this recent incident involving an Iraklion girl and an allegedly drunken British youth should be the straw that breaks the back of that town's outrageous tourism.

It's time for us to reclaim Malia, and tell these "invaders" who every year pillage and plunder – and, yes, rape – to get the hell out of town!

But the question is: who's going to tell them?

So far, the town council, the police, the British Consul, have all been mute. Sure, they give us lip service, and some arrests are made, but no one is standing up and saying enough is enough. If you come here and disrespect our country and our people, then get out . . . we don't need you and we don’t want you. The only people that really benefit from this type of tourism are a handful of club owners and a couple of fast food restaurants.  And, of course, the tour agencies that promote their services to the "pub crawl" mentality, and tell us: "if you don't like it, we'll just take our business somewhere else."

If the local mayor and town council won’t deal with this situation, perhaps it's time to clean house and find people who can. It's really very simple. The next time those tour agencies say "we'll take our business somewhere else," just say YES, that's an excellent idea.
