Dear Editor:

I have been following the story of the British tourist who was alleged to have been attacked by a Greek woman. What stands out is the fact that newspapers in the UK are reporting that the girl has been hailed a heroine in Greece for her actions against rowdy British tourists.

 
If she did in fact set him on fire, I feel I can hardly agree with her being hailed a heroine. However, I understand why local people in holiday destinations such as Crete, could become angry at rowdy behaviour of British tourists. I can assure you that the vast majority of British people feel ashamed to be associated with such behaviour. My point is that not all Brits are like this young man. Had I been there and seen him act this way towards a young local girl, I would have been the one approaching him and I know many of my friends would act in the same way.

Έχω παρακολουθήσει την υπόθεση του Βρετανού τουρίστα, που ισχυρίστηκε ότι του επιτέθηκε μια Ελληνίδα. Αυτό που ξεχωρίζει είναι το γεγονός ότι εφημερίδες στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο αναφέρουν ότι το κορίτσι καλείται ως ηρωίδα στην Ελλάδα για τις πράξεις της ενάντια στους ταραχοποιούς Βρετανούς τουρίστες.

Αν στην πραγματικότητα του έβαλε φωτιά, με δυσκολία μπορώ να συμφωνήσω για την προσφώνηση της ως ηρωίδα.

Εντούτοις, καταλαβαίνω γιατί οι ντόπιοι σε προορισμούς διακοπών όπως η Κρήτη, θα μπορούσαν να θυμώσουν στην άσχημη συμπεριφορά των Βρετανών τουριστών. Μπορώ να σας διαβεβαιώσω ότι η μεγάλη πλειοψηφία των Βρετανών νιώθουν ντροπή να συνδέονται με τέτοια συμπεριφορά. Η άποψη μου είναι ότι δεν είναι όλοι οι Βρετανοί όπως αυτός ο νεαρός άνδρας. Όντας εκεί και βλέποντας τον να συμπεριφέρεται με αυτό τον τρόπο στο νεαρό κορίτσι, θα ήμουν αυτός που θα τον πλησίαζε και γνωρίζω πολλούς από τους φίλους μου που θα έκαναν το ίδιο.

Through your newspaper can I add my touch of sadness that one of my countrymen, which happens to come from my own home town, has once again soiled the good name of every English tourist in insulting one of your young ladies while on holiday?

I cannot believe a drink was thrown over him for no good reason; however, to set the drink on fire was a bit over the top.  In my opinion, all tourists should behave themselves, respecting local customs and people. I had no trouble at all when I was younger meeting local people, fostering friendships from all over the world on holidays which has achieved joy in life.

 
I only hope that the young lady has a fair hearing and the right decision is reached. Like our country, a person is innocent until proved guilty.

Μέσω της εφημερίδας σας θέλω να εκφράσω τη λύπη μου για το ότι ένας από τους συμπατριώτες μου πρόσβαλλε μια νεαρή Ελληνίδα και για μια ακόμα φορά αμαυρώνεται το καλό όνομα του κάθε Άγγλου τουρίστα.  Δεν μπορώ να πω ότι του έριξε το ποτό χωρίς λόγο. Όμως, το να βάλει και φωτιά ξεπέρασε το όριο. Κατά την άποψη μου, όλοι οι τουρίστες θα πρέπει να συμπεριφέρονται, σεβόμενοι τα τοπικά έθιμα και τους ανθρώπους. Δεν είχα κανένα απολύτως πρόβλημα όταν ήμουν νεότερος στο να γνωρίσω ντόπιους, και να διατηρώ φιλίες από όλο τον κόσμο, το οποίο και φέρνει μια ευτυχία στη ζωή.

Ελπίζω μόνο ότι η νεαρή Ελληνίδα θα έχει μια δίκαιη ακρόαση και η σωστή απόφαση θα επιτευχθεί. Όπως και στη χώρα μας, ένα άτομο είναι αθώο μέχρι να αποδειχθεί ένοχο.

Hersonissos KAPI

Dear Editor:

Perhaps you can give me an answer to this, if possible. I have just seen the August online edition of The Khronicles in which the Hersonissos KAPI trip and pictures are featured. However, in the hard-copy (print edition) there is nothing. It makes life difficult for me, especially when the senior citizens see what they describe as "filling the paper with nothing local" edition after edition. Are we wasting our time?

Unfortunately, the KAPI story did not make it into the print edition, as originally scheduled. You must realize that there are very strict limits on space in print, which do not apply to an online publication.

As far as "filling the paper with nothing local," we're sure you must be mistaken. In perusing the August print edition, we've counted five Hersonissos articles, including the main Page One story on the Hersonissos Water Works, which affects all township residents. And, checking our past editions, we find numerous KAPI stories, including last month's (July) "Hersonissos KAPI Goes Green," which even featured a Page One photo.

ΚΑΠΗ Χερσονήσου

Ίσως μπορείτε να μου δώσετε μια απάντηση, αν είναι δυνατόν. Μόλις είδα την online έκδοση Των Χρονικών του Αυγούστου στην οποία εμφανίζεται η εκδρομή και εικόνες του ΚΑΠΗ Χερσονήσου. Ωστόσο, στην εφημερίδα δεν υπάρχει κάτι. Δυσκολεύομαι, ιδιαίτερα όταν οι γηραιότεροι πολίτες βλέπουν αυτό που περιγράφουν ως "γεμίζοντας την εφημερίδα με τίποτα τοπικό" έκδοση μετά από έκδοση. Σπαταλάμε το χρόνο μας;

Δυστυχώς, η ιστορία του ΚΑΠΗ δεν εκτυπώθηκε στην εφημερίδα όπως αρχικά σχεδιάστηκε. Πρέπει να συνειδητοποιήσεις ότι υπάρχουν πολύ αυστηρά όρια στην έκδοση εκτύπωσης, τα οποία δεν εφαρμόζονται σε online έκδοση.

Και δεν αληθεύει ότι "δεν γεμίζουμε την εφημερίδα με κάτι τοπικό", είμαστε σίγουροι ότι πρέπει να μπερδεύτηκες. Μελετώντας την εφημερίδα Αυγούστου, μετρήσαμε πέντε άρθρα για τη Χερσόνησο, συμπεριλαμβανομένης και της συνέντευξης της ΔΕΥΑΧ, που έχει επιπτώσεις στους κατοίκους όλου του δήμου. Και, ελέγχοντας τις προηγούμενες εκδόσεις μας,  βρίσκουμε πολλές ιστορίες του ΚΑΠΗ, περιλαμβανομένου και του περασμένου μήνα (Ιούλιος) "Το ΚΑΠΗ Χερσονήσου τιμά το περιβάλλον", που χαρακτηρίστηκε και από μια φωτογραφία στην  πρώτη σελίδα.

Ripping Off Tourists

Dear Editor:

Recently, I saw a news item regarding excessive charges for the hiring of sun beds and umbrellas on certain beaches in Crete. Our relatives met a young couple who had stayed at an all-inclusive hotel in Aghia Pelagia. They were horrified that the charge for two sunbeds and one brolly was 30 euros per day! The same young couple was also quoted by their hotel staff a charge of 10 euros each for the courtesy bus into Iraklion. They replied that fellow guests where told the price was four euros. The staff member said "sorry, it was a mistake," and charged the lower price. (One does wonder where the extra six euros would have ended up if they had accepted the original price!)

With the difficulties within the tourist trade affecting all businesses here, these instances will only serve to make visitors say "never again." And, these "rip-off merchants" give a bad name to the vast majority of honest, hard-working people here. The tourist police may be turning a blind eye to this gross profiteering, but they should crack down hard on the offenders.

Αισχροκέρδεια εις βάρος Τουριστών

Πρόσφατα, είδα μια είδηση που αφορούσε στις υπερβολικές χρεώσεις για ενοικιαζόμενες ξαπλώστρες και ομπρέλες σε ορισμένες παραλίες στην Κρήτη. Οι συγγενείς μας γνώρισαν ένα ζευγάρι νέων που έμεναν σε ξενοδοχείο all-inclusive στην Αγία Πελαγία. Τρομοκρατήθηκαν όταν η χρέωση για δυο ξαπλώστρες και μια ομπρέλα ήταν 30 ευρώ τη μέρα! Στο ίδιο νεαρό ζευγάρι έγινε προσφορά από προσωπικό του ξενοδοχείου τους για 10 ευρώ έκαστος για το λεωφορείο του ξενοδοχείου προς Ηράκλειο.  Απάντησαν ότι άλλοι φιλοξενούμενοι χρεώθηκαν τέσσερα ευρώ. Τότε το μέλος του προσωπικού είπε "συγνώμη, έκανα λάθος", και χρέωσε τη χαμηλότερη τιμή. (Αναρωτιέμαι τα επιπλέον έξι ευρώ που θα κατέληγαν αν δεχόντουσαν την πρώτη προσφορά!)

Με τη κρίση στον τουριστικό κλάδο επηρεάζοντας όλες τις επιχειρήσεις εδώ, αυτές οι περιπτώσεις κάνουν τους επισκέπτες να πουν "ποτέ ξανά". Και, αυτές "οι αισχροκέρδειες" δίνουν κακό όνομα στην πλειοψηφία των τίμιων, σκληρά εργαζόμενων ανθρώπων εδώ. Η τουριστική αστυνομία ίσως εθελοτυφλεί στην απέραντη αισχροκέρδεια, αλλά θα έπρεπε να βάλουν το μαχαίρι στο κόκαλο στους παραβάτες.

The Old Base

Dear Editor:

I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy reading The Khronicles on line. I was stationed at Iraklion Air Station in 1965, and I have very fond memories of the island and the area around the base. Your paper provides kind of a link to the past for many of us who still remember Crete.
Some of your readers may find it interesting that I have re-created Iraklion Air Station circa 1965, with 3D models, that has been accepted by Google Earth. Now, most of the major structures that were on the base in 1965 are represented by 3D models. You can see them by simply going near ground level on Google Earth near the base. Dear Editor:

An old friend who retired in Crete more than ten years ago has not responded for a few years, and I wonder if he (Alfred E. Long) or his wife (Judith) might have died within the past 2 or 3 years. I could not find an obituary source, and wonder if you could provide any information about them?
