ITALIAN NAVAL SHIP SAYS
'CIAO' TO CRETE

Hundreds of local residents took advantage of the open house invitation to visit one of the world's biggest and most impressive sailboats, "Amerigo Vespucci," the pride of the Italian Navy, when it docked at the port of Iraklion for a four-day visit.

The sailboat, which is used as a training vessel by Italy's Naval Cadets Academy, sails annually around the world as an ambassador of the arts, culture and maritime tradition of the neighboring country.
The vessel, a tall ship named after the explorer Amerigo Vespucci, was built in 1930 and was launched on February 22, 1931.
