Speaking Out On Malia

Dear Editor:

As a Malia resident and worker for 14 years and an avid reader of The Khronicles, I was utterly dismayed to read the editor's comments in the September issue. Referring to the British tourists as invaders, is unfair and, in my opinion, totally untrue. I work in a busy English pub/restaurant in the heart of Malia and can honestly say we have never had so much as a murmur of trouble here (this includes during live football programmes involving rival fans). We enforce British law here, i.e. If people are obviously drunk we will refuse to serve them and politely ask them to leave, giving directions to their hotel if need be (we also serve only brand named spirits).
In the same issue, you interview a Malia barman who hit the nail on the head and clearly states who and what is responsible for turning these decent, polite young girls and boys into drunk and out of control individuals who never asked to drink bombas! I believe that if all licensed premises in Malia reverted to selling only named brand spirits for a reasonable price the majority of tourists and locals alike would benefit and many of the problems solved.
There are many decent, honest owners and workers in Malia who not only want the British to stay; they most definitely need them to! Without British tourists here 70 percent of businesses will have to close, not to mention how many local people will suffer when rooms are left empty because of a lack of British workers.
Everybody should pull together to get Malia back on track as the No. 1 holiday destination.

Of course we weren't referring to all British tourists as invaders, just the ones that rape and pillage. If we are able to clear out the "bad seeds," the decent British tourists, as well as those of other nationalities, will probably return in droves.

Μιλώντας για τα Μάλια

Αγαπητέ Συντάκτη:

Σαν κάτοικος Μαλίων και εργαζόμενη για 14 χρόνια και φανατική αναγνώστρια Των Χρονικών, τρόμαξα πραγματικά διαβάζοντας τα σχόλια του συντάκτη, στην εφημερίδα του Σεπτεμβρίου. Αναφερόμενος στους Βρετανούς τουρίστες σαν εισβολείς, είναι άδικο και, κατά την άποψη μου, εντελώς αναληθές. Εργάζομαι σε ένα πολυάσχολο Αγγλικό εστιατόριο/ πάμπ στην καρδιά των Μαλίων και μπορώ ειλικρινά να πω ότι ποτέ δεν είχαμε ούτε καν ψίθυρους για προβλήματα εδώ (ούτε και κατά τη διάρκεια των live ποδοσφαιρικών αγώνων συμπεριλαμβανομένων των οπαδών της αντίπαλης ομάδας). Επιβάλλουμε το Βρετανικό νόμο εδώ, δηλαδή, αν οι άνθρωποι είναι φανερά μεθυσμένοι, θα αρνηθούμε να τους σερβίρουμε και θα τους ζητήσουμε ευγενικά να φύγουν, δίνοντας κατευθύνσεις για το ξενοδοχείο τους αν υπάρξει ανάγκη (επίσης σερβίρουμε επώνυμα ποτά).

και δηλώνει σαφώς τι και ποιοι είναι υπεύθυνοι για τη στροφή αυτών των ευπρεπών, ευγενικών νεαρών κοριτσιών και αγοριών στη μέθη και εκτός ελέγχου που ποτέ δεν ζήτησαν να πιούν μπόμπες! Πιστεύω ότι αν όλα τα νόμιμα μπαρ στα Μάλια επανέρχονταν στην πώληση μόνο επώνυμων ποτών με μια λογική τιμή, η πλειοψηφία των τουριστών και των ντόπιων θα ωφελούνταν και θα υπήρχε επίλυση σε πολλά προβλήματα.

Υπάρχουν πολλοί κόσμιοι, τίμιοι ιδιοκτήτες και εργαζόμενοι στα Μάλια που όχι μόνο δεν θέλουν να φύγουν οι Βρετανοί , αλλά σίγουρα τους χρειάζονται! Χωρίς τους Βρετανούς τουρίστες εδώ το 70 τοις εκατό των επιχειρήσεων μάλλον θα κλείσει , και πόσοι ντόπιοι θα υποφέρουν όταν τα ενοικιαζόμενα δωμάτια μένουν άδεια επειδή υπάρχει έλλειψη Βρετανών εργαζομένων.

Όλοι πρέπει να συνέλθουν, για να γίνουν και πάλι τα Μάλια ο νούμερο 1 προορισμός διακοπών.

Φυσικά δεν αναφερόμασταν με τον όρο εισβολείς σε όλους τους Βρετανούς τουρίστες, αλλά μόνο σε αυτούς που κάνουν πλιάτσικο. Αν μπορούμε να καθαρίσουμε "τους κακούς σπόρους", οι ευπρεπείς Βρετανοί τουρίστες, καθώς και όλοι εκείνοι από άλλες εθνικότητες, πιθανών θα επιστρέψουν σε μεγάλους αριθμούς.

I just read your September edition and I have to say it is SAD to see the island go to pot. I was stationed there for six years at the old base and fell in love with Crete. Married a great gal from Crete. I have only one question about the mess going on with the bars and the Brits (not all of them). Why in God's name have the Greek people let this happen to their country?

Dear Gary:

Please don't think that what is happening in Malia is happening throughout Crete. This island is still the same as when you fell in love with it years ago; no, actually better in almost every way, as you'll see when you return next summer. Malia is a unique situation, but, as they say, it takes just one rotten apple to spoil the whole barrel.

Μόλις διάβασα την έκδοση Σεπτεμβρίου και πρέπει να πω ότι είναι ΛΥΠΗΡΟ να βλέπουμε το νησί να παίρνει τον κατήφορο. Ζούσα εκεί για έξι χρόνια στην παλιά βάση και ερωτεύτηκα την Κρήτη. Παντρεύτηκα και ένα υπέροχο κορίτσι από την Κρήτη. Έχω μόνο μια ερώτηση όσον αφορά το χάλι που γίνεται στα μπαρ και με τους Βρετανούς (όχι όλους). Για όνομα του Θεού γιατί οι Έλληνες επιτρέπουν να συμβαίνει αυτό στη χώρα τους;

Παρακαλώ, μη νομίζεις ότι αυτό που συμβαίνει στα Μάλια, συμβαίνει σε όλη την Κρήτη. Το νησί αυτό παραμένει το ίδιο όπως όταν το αγάπησες πριν χρόνια. Μάλλον τώρα είναι καλύτερο σχεδόν σε όλους τους τομείς, όπως θα δεις όταν επιστρέψεις του χρόνου. Τα Μάλια είναι μια μοναδική περίπτωση αλλά, όπως λένε, μαζί με τα ξερά καίγονται και τα χλωρά.

Gypsy Ghetto

Dear Editor:

I read with great interest your article on the Roma Ghetto and the fact that the gypsies are getting an interest free loan or "gift" of 60,000 euros!

What I am more interested in is the mayor's reply as to what they can buy with it. He goes on to say that if you go 10 to 15 kilometres out of the city (which direction?) you can get four stremmata and have a house built for 60,000 euros. Could you please reply in the next edition exactly where this Garden of Eden or Promised Land is situated as I am extremely interested?

Dear Mr. Jackaman:

Stressing that he's not a real estate agent, a spokesperson for Mayor Sisamakis emphatically stated there are numerous regions away from the urban centres, where 60,000 euros is adequate for purchasing a home and land, which many gypsies have done after taking the loan. The problem is that they are renting it out to others while they continue to live illegally in the ghetto.

Το Γκέτο των Τσιγγάνων

Αγαπητέ Συντάκτη:

Διάβασα με μεγάλο ενδιαφέρον το άρθρο σας για το Γκέτο των Ρομά και για το γεγονός ότι οι τσιγγάνοι παίρνουν ένα δάνειο χωρίς επιτόκιο της τάξεως των 60.000 ευρώ!

Αυτό που με ενδιαφέρει περισσότερο είναι η απάντηση του δημάρχου για το τι μπορούν να αγοράσουν. Συνεχίζει να λέει ότι αν πάτε 10 με 15 χιλιόμετρα εκτός πόλεως (ποια κατεύθυνση;) θα αγοράσετε τέσσερα στρέμματα και θα μπορείτε να χτίσετε και σπίτι  με 60,000 ευρώ. Πείτε μου, που είναι ακριβώς αυτός ο Κήπος της Εδέμ, καθώς ενδιαφέρομαι ιδιαιτέρως;

Υπογραμμίζοντας ότι ο δήμαρχος δεν είναι μεσίτης, εκπρόσωπος του Δημάρχου Σισαμάκη δήλωσε εμφατικά ότι υπάρχουν πολλές περιοχές εκτός των αστικών κέντρων, όπου 60.000 ευρώ επαρκούν για την αγορά κατοικίας και γης, όπου πολλοί τσιγγάνοι και έκαναν αφότου πήραν το δάνειο. Το πρόβλημα είναι ότι τα νοικιάζουν σε άλλους  ενώ συνεχίζουν να μένουν παράνομα στον καταυλισμό.

Water City

Dear Editor:

I was interested to read your article on water city this month (September). We visited the park in August
and had a great time but was disappointed by the fact that we had a Greek friend with us and he was
charged only 10 euros entrance fee, and we as tourists, were charged 21 euros each!
He did not know the attendant and was not a regular customer, or did he ask for discount, so why was this?
It is upsetting, as I have a house in Gouves and spend a lot of time in Crete paying the taxes and rates as Greek people do.
In the UK, at our theme parks we do not charge tourists more entrance fees, we all pay the same.
This would be regarded as discrimination and would certainly not be allowed.
Are high prices for tourists a contributory factor to Gouves becoming like a ghost town I wonder?

According to a spokesperson for Water City, all visitors, whether Greek or foreign, pay the same admission price.
 However, as part of its promotion program, the park distributes special
"50 percent off" vouchers through banks and other outlets, which are made available to many local residents.
