"Ten million cancer cases of all types are diagnosed globally each year, but with preventive care, many types can simply be chronic illnesses like diabetes."

The speaker was Dr. Kostas Kalbakis from the Pathology and Oncology Clinic of the University Hospital, who was addressing a meeting of "Irida," the Socio-Cultural Women's Association in the Gouves Municipality, held in co-operation with "I Live with Cancer Association."

Dr. Kalbakis was one of two main speakers at the recent event held at the International Exhibition Center in Gournes. His talk on the "cancer and prevention" concept, offered specific details and hope on the subject of breast cancer.

He underlined that "preventive examinations can reveal many types of cancer, sometimes a year before any of the symptoms surface."

The next speaker, psychologist Maria Marousi, analyzed "what prompts us to get preventive examinations and what holds us back." 

"The prevention of illnesses and providing pertinent health information for all residents in our municipality and not only the members in our association is one of our objectives" said Mrs. Hrisa Petsalaki, president of Irida.
