The Iraklion Butchers' Association, founded in 1917, recently held its annual event to honour its patron saint, Michael the Archangel.   

As always, a few days before the celebration, many butchers submited a written wish to keep the icon of the saint in their home for one year, expecting to bring them health, prosperity and good fortune.  A lottery followed and the lucky butcher, in addition to getting the icon, got to choose the church where the holly liturgy would take place.

This year, Mr. Yiannis Fasoulas had the honour of taking the icon to his home and selected the Evangelismos Tis Theotokou Church in Hersonissos for the liturgy.

As the president of the association in the prefecture, Mr. Mihail Mathioudakis said, "the participation of everyone in the celebration of our patron saint is deemed essential; it honours us all and defines our association."
