EDUCATION

By Vasiliki Alexaki-Hronaki
Professor of Literature, Iraklion School of Arts

We conducted an in-depth interview with Mr. Panayiotis Anastasiadis, president of the parents and guardians Association of the Iraklion School of Arts. This is the second part of the interview

How is the cooperation within the association?

As I have said previously the school operates under sordid building conditions which menace the daily life and working conditions of students and professors. The general education classes are being conducted in hole-like classrooms and the children are running from building to building to get through the day's classes. This chaos will continue as long as we don't get the classrooms we were promised, or the teachers who never arrived.  Under these conditions, if understanding, coordination and tolerance did not exist among all those involved (students, professors, school board and parents), the school would have already exploded. Perhaps it's these difficult conditions that have created the love of the students for this school and for the professors who, in spite of the conditions, tenaciously fight on.

The parents' association is there every day, in the school, maintaining the communication between the students, teachers and the board. We anticipate the problems and we offer functional support when we have to.

However, the association does face internal problems. As you know the school of arts assembles students from an enormously large area in the prefecture and this peculiarity has also certain side effects. The attendance of parents in the association's actions is not exactly what we thought it would be so that we go ahead and claim the solutions. One of our objectives for the new year is to band together more parents in the association and get more involved in the school life.

What is the immediate objective of the association and what would be the end result?

Immediate solutions for immediate problems. Immediately finding an essential number of suitable school rooms, even for temporary use, so the school can function humanely. Immediately fill the empty positions with teachers; immediately hire specialty teachers (dance, theatre and cinema) and moving on with tenure for the qualifying teachers so the school can function on a constant basis.

The final objective of the association is for the Iraklion Art School to acquire a proper and safe building like the state said they would provide at the beginning of this journey.
