STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS
OCCUPY GOURNES SCHOOL

"How can we possibly take the Panhellenic examinations with so little classroom time behind us?" was one of the questions asked by student demonstrators during their recent take over of the Iraklion School of Arts in Gournes.

According to the protestors, the frustration over the lack of professors and infrastructures in school buildings led to the demonstration by students, who asked that their demands be satisfied.

"Due to lack of professors, the school is under-functioning and the important problem of a decent school building remains unsolvable," an unidentified teacher said, as he watched the protest.

With their memoranda to the Ministry of Education, the students, who were said to be supported by their teachers and parents, presented the problems they face, such as hundreds of classroom hours of dance, theatre, cinema and painting being lost since the beginning of this school year because of lack of educators.

Among the demands of the students are: their immediate relocation into both floors of the old Iraklion Music School building, so they can soon make up all the lost time; to hire back all the part time art professors, and plan directly for next year to tenure these art educators.
