TEEN REPORT

Christmas Words

Christmas…the beloved holiday of children…the beloved holiday of adults. But a holiday that has apparently lost its importance, since our only preoccupation these days seems to revolve around the gifts and the sweets. But if there was an enormous Christmas tree, with lots of red balls and decorations, and we, the young, were called upon to make one wish on each of its branches, what would we wish?

On the first branch, the tallest, you would think we would wish for health and good times … but, we teens consider those a given. We make wishes for improbable things and forget the most basic. Perhaps it's because we have an appetite for life and the conviction that "all will go well". And why shouldn't it? But let's give life a helping hand by becoming more creative and never stop trying. Health and good times are not always a given. Our ancestors in ancient Greece said: "pray to the gods but move your hands too."

Another wish we would make would be health and peace for our family, our friends and our enemies (yes, our enemies, too)…both mental and physical health, with mental first because maybe it's the more important one.

Then, on the next branch we would wish for progress. Not just in school, but also in life. Maybe we need a little miracle to get ahead in life, because the times we live in are difficult. And few are the people, the really pure, the really good, and the really brave.

On the next branch we gotta wish for the money!  More money, meaning more goods, meaning more comfort, meaning more "happiness." But, happiness emanating from material goods is ephemeral…and then again more people wish it every day. Maybe because of the times…

Then we would wish that certain things change in the educational system… so we get ahead, become better people, and achieve a better Greece, because we are our country's future. We would wish for all the schools in our country to be better equipped, and with suitable educators (not like the forgotten Iraklion School of Arts) and the old 50s school mentality to change at last.

We are certain that on the following few branches we would wish for the prosperity of our homeland as this would bring prosperity in our lives.

In closing, we conclude two things: one is that each wish on the tree of wishes is influenced by the times we are living in, our age and the sociopolitical system; second is that they are all interrelated and if something doesn't change soon…we're lost.

We wish you all a good Christmas and a good year! May the New Year paint our souls, put colour in our lives and place a small "wish tree" in our hearts so that we finally understand who we are and what we're looking for.

(Lord… If you happen to be reading this column in The Khronicles, please grant us one more wish: make it so AEK wins the championship this year!)
