Case 39

This horror movie involves overworked social worker, Emily Jenkins (Renée Zellweger), who thinks she has seen everything that can possibly happen to a child . . . that is, until she calls unexpectedly at the house of her latest case. There she encounters the parents trying to cook their ten-year-old daughter in the oven. Eventually, it turns out that they may have had their reasons for this as Jenkins discovers a little too late that the child is in fact a demon. Jenkins seeks the help of detective Mike Barron (Ian McShane), who, unfortunately, seems to sleepwalk through the film. The movie does provide some scary moments but most are a little short of the mark. Zellweger is not cut out for this type of movie but she doesn’t embarrass herself and Jodelle Ferland’s portrayal of the demon child is very good, making it a decent movie.
