My New (wanna be) Hobby

My house has a big balcony and I didn't like seeing it empty, so I bought a flower in a pot. Then, it still seemed empty so I bought another one…and another one, and then I ran out of money. Finally, I thought it would be more economical for me to just buy the seeds and plant them into the pots. That’s more or less how I got into this new hobby, and suddenly I started gardening!

The pots on my balcony were beautiful! Different colors, different shapes, different sizes. Each one next to the other, all clean and tidy. When I had finally finished decorating my balcony with nature's wonders, and little sprouts began to peep out through the dirt and started to grow, I thought: "Success!" Consumed with my gardening achievement, I decided to expand my, uh, skills to a bigger place…let’s say our family cottage in the village.

Now, when we say cottage we don’t mean some kind of chalet.  It's something closer to the Little House on the Prairie (with three big Rottweilers… have you ever seen a small one). Anyway, I went there to practice my gardening. Of course, I had with me some old clothes and shoes, in order not to mess up the ones I had on. Silly me. As it turned out, I didn’t even have time to think about changing clothes!

As I walked in the yard, the three Rottweilers jumped on me with joy making me so dirty that the dogs and I looked about the same.

I immediately fed the dogs so they would keep busy for a while, allowing me time to enjoy my new hobby. I started digging small holes in the ground with a tool called a trowel. Fortunately, it had rained the day before, making it easy to dig into the dirt. But, in spite of that, after the first fifteen minutes my hands were burning! I looked at them and noticed red spots that I knew were gonna turn into some magnificent blisters!

I stopped then and there. I put the seeds in the holes I had already dug and filled them back with dirt. While I was getting ready to leave, the dogs, now well-fed and with renewed energy, came along joyous to jump on me again.  Dear God! Now, I didn’t only look like a dog, I smelled like a dog, too! And, the more I yelled at them to leave me alone, the more they ignored me (or maybe they were just deaf.)

I felt like a war victim. I decided to leave the "war zone" and practice my gardening exclusively on my balcony. So, I might have gained a new hobby, but I also discovered, to my great disappointment, that I am not meant to be good at it…at least not beyond the limits of my own little house.
