ROUVAS (Gouves) 2
MOHOS 1

In yet another game Mohos did not win and couldn't continue in the championship, while Rouvas did get the three points needed to continue. It was a strong game with many plays from both teams, especially in the second half, where all three goals occurred. The visiting team played defensively and tried with counter attacks to defeat Rouvas. Plousis and the local team played offence, looking for a goal from the generally good defensive playing of Mohos. In the 11th, Merkoulidis, with a kick from 40 metres, sent the ball to the horizontal post of the Rouvas goal. In the 64th, Mohos managed to get ahead when Delithomaiidis centre-crossed from the right and Merkoulidis sent the ball to the Rouvas net. From then on, Rouvas began to high pressure Mohos, leaving openings in its defence, but Mohos did not rise to the occasion. Instead, Rouvas tied the score with a head shot from Halkiadakis on the 79th and three minutes later took the lead with a shot from Pitos, who set up Plousis, who in turn sent the ball to the right-hand lower corner of the Mohos goal post, making it 2-1.

Plousis, Halkiadakis and Pitos stood out for Rouvas team while Ravanos, Merkoulidis and Tsiamis played tops for Mohos.

PAO (Gouves) 0
GORTYS (Aghioi Deka) 3

After only two minutes, a free kick just outside the PAO penalty area was taken by Kiriakakis and the shot by Doko went just wide. Gortys were doing all the attacking at the start, but a good shot from PAO's Kastellianakis hit the crossbar and Gouves slowly began to get back into the game. With neither goalkeeper kept busy, it was turning into a scrappy midfield game. Kastellianakis had a good chance to score after the 40th but he shot tamely at the goalkeeper. Kiriakakis then made a good run, turned his marker and went on to score for Gortys.  After the 52nd Kiriakakis took another free kick and the ball eluded all the players and went straight into the PAO goal to make it 0-2. Within minutes it was 0-3 with a wonderful move by Gortys with several players involved and ended with Kiriakakis scoring his third goal for a hat trick. In the 75th Strintzis seemed to be unfairly sent off. In fact, at times it appeared that one of the linesmen was biased towards Gortys. The Khronicles “Man of the Match”  is Gortys’ Kiriakakis.

PANOM (Malia) 1
EGOI (Iraklion) 0

In a terrible field with just a few people attending because of the rain, despite many absent players, Panom managed to get the three marks necessary for continuing in the championship. The game was fast, with a lot of plays mainly from the home team. The first play for Panom occurred in the 4th with Petraki centre-crossing from the right and Lyraki heading it, but it was saved by the Egoi goalkeeper. The goal came on the 31st after a great pass from Piteros and a shot from Lyraki.  Panom lost a chance to double the score on the 39th when Piteros, with a head shot, sent the ball just out of bounds. In the second half, Panom again had the advantage in the 54th from Arabidis, and on the 57th from Lyrakis and a kick from Rousakis, but the ball was just out of bounds. The referee Mr. Stefanidis carded Tzanakis in the Malia team and Yiamalakis, Samaritakis and Zaharioudakis in the Iraklion team. The Khronlices Man of the Match was Piteros from Panom

I would also like to report that the day before the game, thieves broke into the Panom clubhouse and took three plasma 32' television sets. Mr. Katsoulis, club president, told this reporter that the police are investigating and have prints.

ROMANOS (Elia) 2
MARATHONAS (Kalesia) 2

With a strong wind against them, Marathonas kicked off and Hristakis scored after 20 seconds of play. From a free kick, Marathonas’ Volitakis should have done better with a free header. Both teams played some very good football and Romanos made a good move which ended with Mesothiakakis making a great shot, but Marathonas' goal keeper Ioannis Hristakis was equal to it. A few hard tackles but nothing malicious were creeping into the game and the referee started to hand out a few yellow cards. A shot from Sfakianakis bought out a wonderful save from Romanos' keeper Boirdamis. In the second half straight from the kick off Romanos made a strong appeal for a penalty but was denied by the referee. Romanos started putting on more pressure and Stotis put in a good cross for Yeorgalis to shoot in the goal, and level the score in the 65th. Romanos’ Markou made a good run leaving two defenders behind, but his shot went over the cross bar. A good free kick from Kteniathakis sent the ball, which Marathonas' goal keeper could not hold, and Tzortzis tapped it in for Romanos’ second goal in the 75th. In the dying minutes of the game Marathonas attacked down the left and Hristakis scored his second goal to level the score at 2-2. The Khronicles ‘man of the Match’ was Marathonas’ Hristakis.

OLD FOES MEET AGAIN

Greece will go head-to-head with two of its old foes, Argentina and Nigeria, as well as South Korea, in the soccer World Cup in South Africa next year.

And, the last time these teams met, and the only other time Greece qualified for a World Cup, in the USA in 1994, both were victorious over our local boys; they lost to Argentina 4-0 and to Nigeria 2-0.

Greece's coach Otto Rehhagel said they intend to turn the tables on their old foes, but acknowledged: "Argentina is the favorite, and we must not forget that Nigeria will also be playing on African soil and are a good team as well."

Greece will meet at least one familiar face, Argentinean superstar Maradona, who scored against the national side in the USA and who is now coaching his country’s national team.
