Daybreakers
Yet another vampire film, you might say…but this one, from Australia, is a
vampire film with a twist! Written and directed by the Spierig brothers (The
Undead), it takes place in 2019 where the world looks the same as the
present day with people going to work, driving cars, etc. But the difference
is that they're all vampires. Humans constitute only five percent of the
population, so the vampire food source is in scarce supply and there is only
about a month's worth of blood supply left. Fine
acting by Ethan Hawke as Edward, who leads a team of scientists trying to
find a blood substitute to solve the problem.
Also, good performances by
Isabel Lucas, Sam Neill, Claudia Karvan and, as usual, Willem Dafoe. There
are many twists and turns in this plot and plenty of action, including car
chases to keep you on the edge of your seat, and, as one would expect,
moments of gore. As most of the action takes place at night or indoors, the
use of blue lighting creates good atmosphere. And, an excellent musical
score by Christopher Gordon makes the whole
bloody thing even more worthwhile!
