MALIA RECYCLING
PAYS DIVIDENDS

Malia Municipality is 35,941.31 Euros richer as the Greek Company for Promoting Recycling reinforced the municipality's treasury with that amount for recycling 1,152 tonnes in 11 months in 2009.

The money is the result of a decision by the Ministry of Environment Planning and Public Works for additional aid to local governments for collecting the blue bins of recyclable material.

Recycling in Malia began in April 2008, and blue bins have now been distributed to all the villages of the municipality, and are collected daily and brought to the Centre for Screening of Recyclable Material which operates in Nea Alikarnassos.

Meanwhile, Malia, with the campaign slogan "nothing goes to waste," has joined in a program with the Institution for the Management of Solid Waste in Northern Pediada, which will include recycling in the schools and distributing special bags to all the shops in the area.

According to Malia officials, a new environmental behaviour and a conscience has been created, and, at the same time, a greater effort is being devoted to the operation of the sanitary waste burial facility that serves the Municipalities of Malia, Hersonissos, Gouves and Kastelli.
