Do you have any tips for cleaning a marble mantelpiece badly stained by wood smoke?  Have tried many things but nothing seems to clean it at all.

If you've tried soap and water and the stains won't go away, you can use Trisodium Phosphate (TSP), which is available from your local hardware store. This is a powerful chemical so safety is important: use rubber gloves and open all the windows in the room. Mix a small amount (about ½ cup) of TSP in a large bucket of water and clean the mantel with a scrubbing brush. When clean, rinse with plenty of fresh warm water and dry well with soft cloth.
