GOLF NEWS -
OFFICIAL OPENING OF
AEGEAN
GOLF ACADEMY

On April 5 the Official Start
of The Aegean Golf Academy,
the First Golf Academy in Greece

The Crete Golf Club in Hersonissos, last November went ahead with a pioneering move: It began organising the Aegean Golf Academy, the first academy of golf in all of Greece.

"Aegean Golf Academy began when we engaged the leading Swedish professional trainer, Mr Henrik Engdahl, with the goal that he organises one of the leading Golf Academies on a European level," says Mr. Dimitris Kollaros, Managing Adviser at the Crete Golf Club and an expert player himself, in detailing this innovative project. "In this endeavour, our sponsor is the Aegean Airlines. We offer learning programs for players of all levels, from speed learning for beginners on an individual basis, or, in small teams of six individuals, to specialised courses for professional champions, like Swedish champion Klaus Eriksson, who visited our Academy and was enthusiastic." Modern equipment of the latest technology was a basic concern for this newly established academy, being that it helps so much to improve a player's technique (swing & putting analysis) as well as custom fitting, optimizing and correcting clubs so that they are personally suitable for the player regardless of his or her level.

"Of course, Mr. Engdahl's top notch training experience and excellent teaching techniques make a big difference in all of these," Mr. Kollaros explains. "Mr. Engdahl is a leading professional player who has earned distinguishing honours in all the Aegean Pro-Am organized activities. In our effort to develop and project the Aegean Golf Academy a decisive contribution is made by Yiannis Kakakis, a Cretan, current assistant trainer and former player in the National Golf Team who assists Mr. Engdahl in his work," stresses Mr. Kollaros.

The Sport of Golf in the
Special Olympics in Athens,
in 2011

And, even though Greeks still have not been initiated in the golf culture like the residents of most northern European countries, the fact that golf is one of the 22 sports that will be included in the Special Olympics coming to Athens in June, 2011, as well as the reinstatement of golf as an Olympic sport starting with the Olympic Games 2016, fills local golfers with optimism that the noble sport will continue to be increasingly popular.

"The projection of the sport in the Olympic Games could be the beginning for the sport's wider acceptance in our country," says Mr. Kollaros.  "As a matter of fact, a child that will begin learning golf today is very likely to represent our country in the Olympic Games 2020, because today in Greece there are less than 80 children that are learning to play golf. All that the prospective champions have to do is begin training."
