WOMAN'S DAY OUTING

By Christine Bowes

Approximately 80 members and guests of Irida, the woman's association of the Gouves Township, celebrated woman's day with a fun-filled outing to the Lasithi Plateau.

The first stop of the day was at the Monastery of Kera, and, upon entering the historic church, everyone was given sprigs of rosemary and fresh flowers, before being treated to the wonderful sights of the ancient frescoes, and the treasures in the church's museum.

Following the monastery visit, the group went on towards the plateau to the village of Psychro, and the Diktaion Andron Cave, which, according to one legend, is the birthplace of Zeus.

The luncheon, served at the Taverna Diktamos, featured a variety of well-prepared foods, ranging from home made pasta to lamb and then pork from the oven with wine and raki to accompany.

On full stomachs, it was on to the Holy Monastery of Vidiani, which is dedicated to Zoodochos Pigi, or the Spring of Life, and the Natural History Museum of Dikti. The quaint village of Krasi was next with the ancient huge platanos, or plane tree, in the centre, then the two coaches stopped at the picturesque village square in Mohos for more refreshments.

It was a very special day for all in attendance. As Irida is making a special effort to welcome the many foreign residents of the community, English-speaking Greek members were extremely helpful in providing translations when needed, referring to a group of about 10 people as their "English Speaking Friends," to ensure that a great day would be had by all.
