In conjunction with the World Day of Populations, to be celebrated July 11, a committee of professional women has organized a photographic competition, entitled “Pictures of Life 65+,” to highlight the senior segment of the world’s population.

“The United Nations established this day to remind us of the necessity to contain poverty, to combat mental and physical ailments and the recognition of equality,” said committee member Ellen Weijers of Kokkini Hani, a noted photographer. “Seniors today constitute an important part of the population, which is faced with preconceived ideas, thusly suffering serious discrimination in health matters as well as their daily life. We feel this is a creative way to promote the idea of equality, the continuity of the circle of life and the beauty and worthiness that old age contains.”

Those interested in entering the competition should email their request to: priniotaki@yahoo.com and all the necessary forms will be sent by return email. Or, the necessary forms can also be obtained from The Model Home for the Elderly (former Calypso hotel) in Gouves. Submissions will be accepted through June 20 and an exhibition of all entrees will begin July 11 in Gouves.

Other committee members include Sofia Klidi, publisher of The Khronicles, and Eleni Priniotaki, Social Worker at the Model Home for the Elderly in Gouves.
