SMOOTH SEAS AHEAD
FOR THIS ‘CAPTAIN’

By Lou Duro

“It’s the perfect formula for the good life…the right combination of work and play.”

We were sitting on the deck of a café in Sissi, about an arm’s length from the village’s famous picturesque harbour, and the man philosophizing on life on this brilliant early-summer day was Richie Wensveen, better known as “Captain Jack,” which, not so coincidentally, happened to be the name of the café.

“We moved here a little over a year ago to see if we liked it,” the Captain continued, indicating the ideal location with a wave of the arm. “What’s not to like?” he asked rhetorically, as Sylvia, his “first mate” and wife, smiled her approval.

Back in their hometown of Rotterdam, Richie and Sylvia spent many years honing their craft as bar keepers.

“We had a couple of different places over the years, and each one was a new experience,” he said. “Since we always had good staff, we spent most of the time on the other side of the bar, the customer’s side, and looked and listened. That’s how you really learn the business. We, as customers, can tell Us, as owners, how to make improvements. Because the customer is always right, right?”

While we digested that last bit of philosophy from Richie, Sylvia went on to explain how they ended up in Sissi from Rotterdam.

“When we decided to move to Crete in February, 2009, it was sort of on a trial basis,” she said. “We just packed our clothes and two dogs and came over to see if we liked it, and if we could find a good location to open a cafe.”

Before departing the Netherlands, the Captain and his mate surfed the net checking for business opportunities.

“We found something near Ierapetra, which we thought would be good,” Richie said. “But when we looked at it, we turned it down, because the location was not very good.”

Richie and Sylvia kept looking for the right place, but to no avail. They came to Sissi one day to visit with friends, and were having beers in a taverna on the harbour, and thought how great it would be to have a place here.

“As I sat there, some activity across the harbour caught my attention,” Richie said. “These people were packing everything up and loading it all onto a truck.  Then, just before driving off they put up a ‘for rent’ sign, and I ran around the harbour as fast as I could.”

His being fleet of foot paid off, and that location, a former disco, was quickly transformed into an immediate Sissi landmark, a comfortable bar and lounge for the thirty-plus crowd, with music programmes from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and, of course, that phenomenal view from the back deck.

“We opened officially in May of 2009,” Richie said, “so this is now our second year and we’re very happy. Business is good, we’re open all year, and sometimes we’re open 24 hours straight through. But, like back in Holland, we have a good staff here, too, so we can take time during the day to enjoy the other side of the good life on Crete, like going to the beach.”

Is the Cretan trial period over? we asked Richie and Sylvia.

“We don’t think for one minute of ever going back to Holland, except to get our furniture and bring it over,” Sylvia replied.

“And, of course, my boat.” the captain added.

That’s right! Richie is not a captain in name only. He’s the pilot of a five metre speedboat with an inboard engine which will soon be moored in the Sissi harbour. Its name? You guessed it…The Captain Jack!
