Beware:
Illegal Puppies for Sale

Just as with humans, there is a flourishing criminal business of supplying the west with illegal puppies smuggled in from east European countries, such as Romania, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia.

The poor little dogs, which are brought here by the hundreds, are produced in stables where the unscrupulous dog traders have only one goal…to get rich quick by selling as many dogs as they can.

To do this, they must produce the pups as cheaply as possible, and keep expenses down. This means that the care, treatment, feeding, etc. of the pups, and their mothers, is minimal. The fact that they will lose many of the pups due to sicknesses is calculated in the risk.

People buy these dogs and, because they are cheaper, think that they have saved a lot of money, which is usually not so in the long run. A pure-bred pup from a professional breeder can cost upwards of 800 euros, while one from an unscrupulous producer is usually several hundred euros less. These animals will probably have forged papers and are usually not even inoculated. Many times they are very sick when sold, due to lack of proper health care, but their diseases may not be noticeable until later.  What the buyer saves on the price, he usually must pay the vet for necessary treatments, such as de-worming, and treatment for hereditary sicknesses…that is, of course, if the poor little pup survives at all. Remember, if pups are taken away from the mothers too soon, they suffer from malnutrition. For example, in Greece the law is seven weeks.

Nobody here would even buy a car without checking its history…how does the engine run? Was it in an accident?

But a dog, which will be a true friend for 15 years, is bought in a wink. It is strange, but true, and then lots of times with papers which are not clear or are changed with Blanco. Most of these papers are worthless.

The females have a disconsolate life in claustrophobic cages or behind bars, without good care and attention, which brings on behavioral problems. Unfortunately, the law is almost helpless in these situations, and we can only bring about change if we all oppose the sale of illegal dogs.

While we may be hurt financially, the dogs are the big losers. These imprisoned mothers must produce puppies one right after the other, and after only five years they are no longer useful and are usually killed.

Think before you take on a new “friend” for 15 years or longer. Good breeders prepare their dogs for long and healthy lives, without health problems. They are so worth it!
