All Work and No Play?

What's with the heat wave these last days of June? We still had to take exams on four more courses…and then we would finish. One by one we counted the days until the end because this year has been very tiresome…six more after today, five more after today and that's generally how the whole week went.

So now I'm sitting in front of my desk, being really cosy with my fan (which works day and night on full force) and leafing through my well creased notebooks (I've been a studious child this year).  The sweat is running non stop down my forehead and drying out slowly by the fan. This sweat always runs, always drips! Sometimes from stress and anxiety, other times from worrying, and still other times from excessive heat… So I'm thinking how unfair it is to be deprived of a cool swim in the sea! I'm thinking that no one feels sorry for us students, who fight all year to calm their own anxieties, and those of their parents who worry about their kids’ future. So they compensate these poor students with a pile of exams in the heart of June!

After thinking about all this, I decided to run to the beach, sit under an umbrella, drink my orange juice and fulfil two wishes: cool down and get a bit of colour, which I haven't achieved yet. Just when I was ready to leave, a thought stopped me:

A great student you are! Instead of studying for tomorrow, you want to run around the beaches of Hersonissos. You'll probably see your schoolmates and when they ask if you studied what will you say. That you preferred the beach? Do you think that it's only you who needs to get out and relax a bit? I bet a lot of other kids have the same thoughts, but they sit home and hit the books."

I hesitated a trifle before I took the big step and came out from the house. Upon reaching the beach, I came face to face with an indescribable sight! All my friends and schoolmates were frolicking in the water and motioned me to join them! Some were playing racquets, and yet others were plunging in the sea. When I asked if they had studied no one answered me!

I wish everyone a good summer. Live it without any afterthoughts or guilt. Just have fun!
