EDUCATION

The Gouves Centre for Environmental Education was founded in 2008. With a contract signed between the Ministry of Education and the Gouves Municipality, the church building in the former base was granted, with the municipality responsible for renovating and equipping the new site. The building was ready for use in March, 2010, (without being entirely finished) and did receive visiting schools during the second six month period of the 2009-2010 school year. Despite the problems that its five teachers faced, today the centre operates in comfortably equipped spaces and already has been visited by roughly 500 students. At the next school year, and under suitable conditions, it will be fully developed and ready to accept roughly 2000 students.

Also, this summer, an opportunity is being given to young people18-30 years of age, and especially Gouves youths, to take part in three-day sailing events that will be carried out jointly with the Gazi Sailing Group and the monitoring of the New Generation Secretariat. During the sailing journey, an environmental programme will take place which was worked out by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and the Gouves Centre for Environmental Education.

This centre, which has easy access to all prefectures of Crete and is adjacent to the Marine Research Centre, CreteAquarium, and the sea, creates the best conditions needed to become one of the best environmental centres of Greece, with European specifications. For more information visit the Centre's page: http://kpe-gouvon.ira.sch.gr/.

More generally, the environmental education centres throughout Greece, constitute poles for innovative education and they have developed know-how and experience that with enough political will they could help all local society grow and play an important role in the management of the environment. Of course, certain bureaucratic disincentives that have recently cropped up for the Centre's personnel must be overcome first. And, of course, the public sector character and "tuition free" nature of these centres must be safeguarded, as well as the continuous effort to upgrade and improve the education and training they provide.
