CRETAN GOLFERS ATTEND
FIFTH AEGEAN PRO AM

Once again, the Aegean Pro Am Competition was the golfing event of the year. This year it was organized at the new golf course, Costa Navarino, which was very successfully inaugurated in Kalamata, on the mainland, in June, with an impressive attendance by players from the Crete Golf Course in Hersonissos, where it was held for its first three years.

Pro Am is a golf competition where each team is made up by one professional and three amateur players. At the same time, besides the team competition, players also compete individually, with each one in his athletic category, professional and amateur.

The Cretan attendance was worthy of note. From a total of 48 teams from 19 countries, four were from Crete. The man in charge of the Golf Academy at the Crete Golf Club, Henrik Engdahl, was classified second.

In the photograph, winner Lee Rinker from the United States receives an award from Theodoros Vasilakis, chairman of Aegean Airlines, and Vasilis Konstantakopoulos, the founder and soul of Costa Navarino. In his speech at the award ceremony, Mr. Vasilakis stressed that: “At this critical period for Greece, time in point, Aegean Airlines participates in the National fight and sees the economic crisis as an occasion for decisive and collective action. We believe that the golf industry can play a vital role, creating direct revenues for the Greek economy that will emanate mainly from golf course enterprises, tourist activities and real estate, in conjunction with corresponding job positions.”

MALDIVES GOLFERS
WON’T MAKE WAVES

The Maldives are promoting a plan for a floating golf course in trying to deal with a not so auspicious future due to a rising sea level.

This island country recently signed an agreement with a Dutch company for the creation of the world’s first golf course that will float together with a conference centre and hotel. All three will be found on a platform in the Indian Ocean.

Mahmoud Razi, civil aviation minister for the Maldives explained that “we need this new approach because of the climatic change and the erosion of the grounds in our islands.”

The highest point in the Maldives is just two metres above sea level.

 TO CAPTAIN RYDER CUP IS
WESTWOOD’S DREAM

British Golfer Lee Westwood has admitted his ambition to one day captain the Europe Ryder Cup team.

The world number three is the top ranked European and is set to be one of Captain Colin Montgomerie's mainstays in the 2010 edition at Celtic Manor.

"I'd love to be captain one day,” said. “It's a massive honour and very few people get to do it. Hopefully I'll get the chance."

But he added that the captaincy is still "quite a long way down the road".

The 2010 Ryder Cup takes place in Wales from September 30 to  October 3, with Mr. Montgomerie looking to guide his team to a victory which would see them regain the trophy after their 16½-11½ defeat by the United States two years ago.

Mr. Westwood believes Montgomerie's passion for the competition - the Scot represented Europe eight times and is the equal third-highest points scorer in the competition's history - will help him be "a great captain.”
