NOVEL SET IN CRETE
STARTED WITH A DREAM

By Lou Duro

Jane Sharp claims to have had vivid dreams all her life, some even when she’s awake, but there have been none that compares to the nocturnal envisage that invaded her sleep shortly after arriving in Crete in 1994.

“The spirit of a Minoan prince asked me for help in reuniting him with his beloved princess, and we traveled to his palace in search of the lady,” Jane recalled. “It was so real that for days I sat among the ruins of the Minoan Palace near Malia trying to pick up mental messages.”

Within weeks, Jane realized she must write a novel about these experiences.

“I had the Minoan story pretty much set in my mind,” she said, “so I decided to incorporate it into my own life experiences to create the novel.”

The result is an exciting work of fact-based fiction, Tears from the Sun – A Cretan Journey, which hit bookstores and Amazon last month.

The author was born in England, where, at the age of seven, she played a mean piano and began showing signs of the creative talents that were soon to blossom into musical and literary success.

While attending high school, Jane’s talents turned to poetry and, later, she became a member of the Brewery Poets of Kendal and studied under the guidance of renowned poetess, Carol Ann Duffy, now England’s Poet Laureate. Jane’s award-winning works have been read on the BBC and have appeared in various publications, including The Khronicles.

In 1994, after a devastating business crisis which left Jane and her husband, David, bankrupt, the couple borrowed 500 pounds, packed a rucksack and headed out to conquer the world.

“We took the Magic Bus and first stop was Athens,” Jane said, “and that was it! Greece had said: ‘stop right here’.”

The couple ended up in Crete at the campground in Sissi, working at various jobs…she played piano in a pub, and gave music lessons, and ran her own bar in Vrahassi; he worked construction and now has a thriving business renovating old homes.

Jane, with her exuberant personality, can be seen traveling throughout Crete, visiting bookstores, conducting readings and holding book signings, but, somehow, she still finds time to pursue her writing and musical careers, and is now learning to play the cello and working on the sequel to Tears from the Sun.

“The working title is In Search of the Emerald Crystal, with the same protagonist, Kate,” she said. “Also, I have two other novels as works in progress.”

With a schedule like that, we asked if that other British author, J. K. Rowling, should be looking over her shoulder.

“She probably already is,” Jane answered without hesitation, “but not in my direction!” Then, after just the shortest pause: “At least not yet.”
