The findings outline measures to confront the
infestation which has reached epidemic proportions, as well as measures
to protect regions still not infected. Protection measures include a periodic check
(about twice a month) with two pheromone traps, placed for 24 hours, to
check the flight patterns of the weevil. Also, any planting of other
palm trees, especially the canary palm variety, must be prohibited. |
Also recommended is the treatment (with approved
insecticides) of palms within a 1000 metre radius from the infected palms in
order to prevent new offences. A general prevention measure is also to avoid
pruning palms from spring through to autumn. But more important, it was judged essential that
informative booklets be dispatched to the public via water and electricity
bills.
