Summer Tips

Alas, along with glorious summer, come those not-so-glorious parasites.

Fleas, of course, are active all year around. But, in the summer they multiply like crazy because their eggs develop much faster in the heat. Besides the irritation on the skin, those pesky critters can also turn into an intestinal worm (dipylidium) and cause anaemia.

Although ticks exist mostly in spring and autumn, they are also a danger in the summer, causing itchiness and carrying pathogen material, which can lead to diseases such as ehrlichiosis, piroplasmosis and lyme.

Also, if your dog licks furiously at his paws, or scratches his ears, you must check it for mites. There are lots of medications which can relieve all of these problems.

Beach and nature

Seawater and sand can irritate the skin. A good rinse with clean water is vital. Besides, your pet can get diarrhea by swallowing salt water. Also, don’t let him jump too quickly into cold water because there is a risk of drowning.

Pet Swimming

On Crete, our dogs swim mostly in the sea. If they swim in a lake, there are other risks. Botulism is an infectious form of food poisoning which is the cause of death of many water birds and fish. The bacterium which causes botulism multiplies greatly in special environments, such as one with high proteins (dead birds or fish in the water), high temperature and still-standing water.

Warning signs of botulism includes paralysis in neck, head, and paws.

Air Attacks

In the evening, mosquitoes search for fresh blood. The consequences of these “meals” are not only unpleasant because of the itching, but they can also transmit dangerous diseases. One of these diseases, which is seen a lot here, is leishmaniasis. Your dog has to wear a special flee collar to protect him from this disease. Wasps are dangerous because their sting is painful and can cause allergic reactions. A sting in the throat of the dog can cause an infection in the throat and obstruct the breathing.

Leptospirosis

There is a group of illnesses caused by leptospires, which is bacteria entering small wounds in the nose or mouth, or even through the skin. The sickness can also be contacted by humans.  The most infectious place is water which got contaminated by urine from people and animals. Leptospire can remain dormant for months, and even years, because the infection can slumber in the kidneys mostly, but also in the liver. Sometimes the infection comes quickly with high fever, yellow mucus and dark yellow urine. Because leptospirosis is a sickness which can affect people, too, it is very important to get your dog vaccinated once a year.

Of course, summer is nice for dogs as well as humans, and, together, we can enjoy the beach and the countryside…but take extra good care of your pet during July and August…there are extra risks lurking in the heat.
