The causes and effects of this algae, or microscopic organisms found in
coastal waters, will be discussed by noted scientists from around the world. Algae are naturally occurring microscopic plants that live in bodies of
water all over the world. Most algae are beneficial to the planet and the
environment, and serve as a source of food for various animals. However,
there are harmful algae, sometimes referred to as the “red tide,” which can
produce poisons that can kill shellfish, mammals, birds, and other aquatic
life. Algae need sunlight, water, and various nutrients to survive and
thrive. When the water is combined with harmful chemicals such as
fertilizers and other nitrates, it can create a sort of “mutant,” or
harmful, algae that are bad for the environment.
