EDUCATION

By Vasiliki Alexaki-Hronaki

The Gouves Institute for Professional Training

From 1998, the 2nd Institute for Professional Training has been operating at the former American base in Gournes, in a building given by the prefecture for the exclusive use by the institute. As of this year, the 2nd I.E.K. will operate as an annex of the Iraklion Institute, and will offer two information technology workshops and a cooking and pastry making workshop, completely equipped with permanent electromechanical installations, where also the final exams for certification are held.

All departments of the various specialities are adapted to the needs of the local society, especially those concerning tourism. For the most part, graduates find it easier to obtain work in their field.

Offered specialities for the first six-month training period (school year 2010-11) are: Assistant physiotherapist; sound technician; ecological agriculture technician; specialist in hotel services and catering, and security service employee.

The Gouves municipality helps the institute to cover certain needs (heating oil, electricity bills and maintenance work), and intends to further help on the face of the new municipality. The Institute is found 20 km outside the city of Iraklion, easily accessible by bus, resulting in some of its students being not only from Iraklion but also from some of the rural areas like Gouves, Hersonissos, Malia, and even Aghios Nikolaos.

To register, you must have graduated Lyceum, regardless of the year of your graduation. The studies are for the duration of four six-month periods. If you are a graduate from a Lyceum with a particular speciality, then you may enrol in the 3rd or 4th 6-month period.
