“The initial planning phase of litter management in the
Malia Township has been completed, now that all the necessary equipment has
been received and installed at its recycling station,” according to Mayor
Kostis Lagoudakis. The phase included new procedures regarding litter
management.

The municipality asked for the active
participation of the residents in all planning of litter management and
mainly in the recycling.
The main objective of the local Malia government is to
promote recycling to the population.
In the recycling station, local businessmen and
residents can deposit daily quantities up to 1000 kilos of recyclables,
including such things as: motorcycle and bicycle tyres; car and truck tyres
without frames; timber; street paving material; mattresses; metals; carpets;
paper; electric and electronic appliances; cardboard; fluorescent and common
light bulbs; soil, sand, asphalt; concrete; asbestos; glass; hard plastic
PVC; car batteries and clothing and shoes.

Other than completing the recycling station, the Malia
municipality participated in other actions involving litter management, like
composting. Recently, 100 bins for domestic composting were
distributed by the Institute for Solid Waste Management and as it turned out
they were not enough to cover the increased demand. In these bins, users can
put remnants of raw or boiled vegetables but no sauces. Also, the remnants
of fruits, flour, rice, cereals, bread, coffee grounds, coffee-pot filters,
manure of vegetarian animals, flowers, leaves, branches, hay, sawdust,
chippings, paper, eggshells, ash from firewood, organic fertilizers, dry
fruits, olive pits. “With composting we reduce up to 70 per cent the organic
refuse that we throw away, which translates to 150 kilos less refuse each
year from each individual”, reports the chairman of the waste management
enterprise, Mr. Yannis Mountrakis. For more information with regard to
