IT'S A 'JEWEL' OF A FARM
AND IT'S ON MAIN STREET

Spiros Kovoglanidis is a jeweller. No, Spiros Kovoglanidis is a farmer. Wait a minute, will the real Spiros please stand up? No need to, since Spiros is both – his profession is jewellery and his hobby is farming. A strange combination, for sure. But what is even more surprising is the fact that he practices both right on Kokkini Hani's main street!

It's odd enough to see any patch of green stuck in between the car rentals, supermarkets and gift shops on the busy thoroughfare; but, when that "patch" turns out to 1,000 square meters of prime farm country, it makes you want to stop and take a closer look.

That's just what the inquiring reporter for The Ko-Go Khronicles did, and this is what he found: rows of corn, patches of cabbage, and everything in between. There was zucchini, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, several kinds of melons, plus many varieties of flowers. In other words, a real farm. And, it's all just one store down from the Kovoglanidis Jewellery Store (only the Kokkini Hani Pharmacy separates the two).

Normally you would think Spiros was a farmer from the hills of Crete who decided to open up a jewellery store. However, it was the other way around. Spiros was a well-known jeweller in Athens for many years before moving to Kokkini Hani about 16 years ago. He started with one store, which is considered to be the best in the area, and now has three. The other two are located in the Rinela Hotel in Kokkini Hani and Serita Beach in Anissara. He apparently has a knack for making things grow – whether it be jewellery stores or corn.

"And, just what do you do with all this produce?" we asked him. "It's my hobby," Spiros said, "so I just give it to my friends." The next question was obvious: "Tell us, how does one become your friend?"
