THE ROVING REPORTER'S QUESTION OF THE MONTH:
"What would you do to improve
our area's sagging tourism situation?"

NICK ALTOBELLI, England (Kokkini Hani): First and foremost is to get rid of the all-inclusive nonsense, which is killing everyone. It just brings the low-budget tourists who never leave the hotel, so what good is that to Crete? They never get out to really enjoy our island anyway. Then, we should improve the infra-structure. Clean everything up, repair the walkways, roads, install lighting, benches – in other words, make it all more inviting for the visitors to enjoy. It wouldn't cost all that much. It's like they say when you're trying to see a house – buy a pot of paint and go to work.

LOUISE ARGYROKASTRITIS, England (Episkopi): The entire system needs reworking, and it should start with more support from the government. Tourism isn't the same as years ago, people change and their interests change, too. Let's give business owners and shopkeepers a crash-course in dealing with these changes. Give them guidelines and support in setting new standards in dealing with the new tourist.

PATRICIO van LEEUWENBURG, Holland (Gournes): I would make the whole area more attractive, more inviting to the tourist. Close off some of the roads to traffic and make more walkways, complete with decorative lighting, benches, palm trees. Even bring in some horse and carriages. Crete is an old, picturesque island – let's start by restoring some of the things that made us a popular resort in the first place.
