TRI-TOWN AREA
HAS 'OWN' ISLAND

In case you didn't know it, that beautiful island that you see when gazing off into the sunset actually belongs to us – the municipality of Gouves. That's right, Dia Island, that beautiful hunk of rock, is a lot closer to the shores of Gouves than it is to those of Iraklion, and if you try to mess with it you'll have to deal with Dimosthenis Blavakis, mayor of Gouves.

Recently, the Iraklion Harbour and Port Authority (OLI) tried it, and got its hand slapped, literally speaking, of course. It seems OLI announced that it was hiring a technical advisor to explore ways to rebuild and beautify Dia. When hearing of the planned "invasion" into Gouves territory, Mr. Blavakis called OLI " . . . conquerors of foreign soils."

The Mayor said Dia Island, five kilometres long and three kilometres wide, has an important ecosystem, and there are many archaeological, ecological and other legal problems to deal with before anything can be done.
