THE ROVING REPORTER'S
QUESTION OF THE MONTH IS:
"IF YOU WERE 'MAYOR FOR A DAY,' WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO?" |
| |
| |
SYLVIA SYBEN, Germany (Gournes): I would do something to correct the beach situation in Gournes. There is not much of a sandy beach coastline in Gournes, especially compared with our neighbouring towns of Kokkini Hani and Gouves. Most of the seafront here is almost solid rock, except for the area in front of the hotel and a couple of very small spots. There is not enough beach space to accommodate the expanding population of Gournes on a hot summer day. Of course, the fact that I have a seaside taverna has nothing to do with my decisions as mayor! Once I corrected that injustice, I would then concentrate on the less serious problems of the area.

FRIEDA LARDINOIS, Belgium (Kokkini Hani): If I was elected Mayor, I would pass a law to ensure that everyone would keep their own “turf” clean and litter-free. And then twice a year all the people would be required to come together in order to clean all public places, beaches, etc. As a reward I would have a giant BBQ party for everyone. |

| |
GUIDO PILLE, Belgium (Amnisos): I've been in Crete for over 20 years so I know exactly what needs to be done. I would listen to everyone’s problems and try to fix them. I would make sure that the streets would be clean and the traffic rules respected. I’d make sure that there’s a city hall where everyone can get information, which would include a “help desk” to answer technical problems. Also, I would want to have a medical centre/service. This is my list of frustrating things that, as Mayor, I would deal with.
TERESA MASSEY, England (Kokkini Hani): I would bring tourism back to Kokkini Hani. I've lived here for three years, but, before that, I came to Kokkini on holiday twice a year since '91. This place was exciting and prosperous then, always something going on. Now, if you look around, you see scores of vacant shops and nearly deserted streets, and the economy has gone way down. The local government should do much more to promote this area as a holiday destination, perhaps working in conjunction with the national government.
