CRETAN OLIVE OIL
WINS AMERICAN 'GOLD'

Extra virgin Cretan olive oil won a gold medal at the International Olive Oils of the World Competition, which was held recently in Los Angeles, California. The competition, the largest in the U.S., is sponsored by the California Olive Oil Council and received major participation by Spain, France, Greece, California, Italy and other oil-producing countries and regions.

The winning olive oil, which carries the “PDO, Protected Designation of Origin” seal, a highly coveted European Union recognition for quality, was imported by Taste of Crete, an American company based in New Jersey and headed by Esther Psarakis. “We are extremely honored to be awarded Gold in this competition," she said. "It gives well deserved recognition to the farmers of Crete who take exceptional pride in their extra virgin olive oil’s careful cultivation and production."

Mrs. Psarakis, born and raised in America, married into a Greek family. After several annual excursions to her husband’s family farm in Crete she began to understand the history and dietary importance of olive oil in the Cretan culture, and she developed a passion for the culture, food and people of the island.

“I have known for years that some of the finest extra virgin olive oil is from Crete, and this medal proves it. And I am now dedicated to importing its finest quality natural food products, as well." In addition to her Gold winning extra virgin olive oil, she imports raw varietal honeys from various areas of Crete and has created a line of traditional Cretan cookies based on her mother-in-law’s old-country recipes.
