And the winners are . . . This year's 2nd Dog Show by the Heraklion Canine Society, an affiliated member of the Kennel Club of Greece, was an excellent event, with a very high standard of dogs being shown. There were 10 groups. The Best In Show was chosen from the winners of each group. The overall winner was a 15-month-old American Akita, who had won this Supreme Winner title twice in Cyprus.
The runner up was a Black Spanish Waterdog, with curly black hair. Winning third place was a beautiful Greyhound, very regal looking. My other personal favourites were a Pekinese named Fina (left), and a beautiful little West Highland Terrier, both winning best in their groups. The judges were from Finland, Italy, Germany, Greece and England. We thoroughly enjoyed this show, and thought the organization and presentation was excellent.
Cretan kittens in Holland . . . A Dutch couple, Rob and Anja Storm, while on holiday, found two kittens abandoned in the street. They did all the necessary things with a vet, and took them home with them to Holland. Well done.
Shirley and Joe's dog, Wishy the greyhound, had an accident, and had to
have a pin put in his leg. He was taken to Rania the Vet for the operation. We all wish Wishy a speedy recovery.
We had a call from Gaynor at The Haven asking us to check on a dog that had been run over near the American base. She wanted to know if it was still alive before she came all the way from Malia. When we arrived, two men from the Gouves Demos were looking after the dog. It had a broken leg and other injuries, but was alive. We told the men to find something to keep the dog warm, as it was in shock, which they did. They offered to take the dog to Gaynor, to save time, and she gave them directions on the mobile phone. These men were wonderful, and so caring, as were several others who offered to help. However, in spite of everyone's fast actions, the dog didn't make it. Although the accident occurred in the morning, and the dog was taken straight away to Malia, the vet didn't get around to seeing him until that evening, during his regular hours. When we called the vet, Andreas, he said the dog died of extensive injuries, but refused to make any other comment.
Heavy 'rain' . . . we may have had spectacular storms on Crete this past month, but it never actually rained cats and dogs. It's a different case in Poland. A passer by was stunned when a huge St. Bernard dog fell on his head as he walked along. The poor animal had been pushed from a two storey window by his drunken owner. Luckily, Oscar the dog is now being taken care of by an animal shelter, having survived, thanks to his soft landing.
Adoption of the Month . . . Tiny, a medium size black and tan Rough Haired Terrier, has a lovely character, and is very friendly. Loves long walks, and people. He is 2 ½ years old.
If anyone can give this really nice dog a home, please call Joe or Shirley at 2810-781258, or contact this column.
