  Dear Editor:
I am sure that many readers are aware of the new, much stiffer penalties now in place for driving offences - but has anyone noticed an improvement in standards since they came into effect, I wonder?
Driving home after giving lessons in Poros, I have, on just three recent occasions, watched no less than twelve cars sailing straight through red lights (new penalty - 700 Euro fine). The last of these actually overtook me on double white lines as I waited for the green, drove through that red light and the next two - all at breakneck speed!
Why have the new fines seemingly had no influence on mad driving? The answer might be related to what I was told by a neighbouring fast-food shop owner here in Hersonissos. Apparently local police feel that these new fines are too high and are totally unwilling to enforce them.
Living in a country where an average of six people a day, about 1,500 per year, die on the roads, it totally amazes me that some policemen - charged with the sanctity of human life above all else - are seemingly ignoring the very legislation which would help them to avoid needless deaths. Amazing!!!
John McLaren

Dear John:
You're right, it is amazing. The police certainly seem to ignore speeders, reckless drivers and those who run stop signs and red lights. They seem more intent on standing by the side of the road inspecting tax papers, which is ridiculous, since on-coming motorists receive ample warning through the code of blinking lights. Besides, a driver without proper papers won't kill us – but a reckless driver sure will.

Dear Editor:
Please add me to your e-mail list. I visited the Nesta in May when visiting my sister in Anopoli and had the pleasure of meeting you. Since then she has forwarded me copies of the Ko-Go Khronicles which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Dear Editor:
My husband ( a long time 'regular' in Kokkini) and I (four visits so far) were delighted to be able to subscribe to your news letter by e-mail as it helps us to hang on to the holiday feeling whilst back in grey England. Thank you so much. I feel I must respond to the letter in your recent issue about Ousies. We have enjoyed many lunchtimes there, particularly the 'ding-dongs' between coaches and parked cars. I find it hilarious and quite entertaining!
Admittedly the traffic needs sorting out, but what better recommendation can a restaurant have than that locals stop right outside and collect their (pre-ordered) food. Food, service and hygiene are excellent. Long may it continue.
We hope to return again next year, but meanwhile send warm greetings to our many friends.

Dear Editor:
My husband & I have spent our holiday in the Gournes area of Crete for the last 9 years and were very excited to come across your newspaper in a local supermarket. We would love to subscribe to your paper and be able to keep up with the latest news whilst we are in the UK. I did fill in our email address on your web site but as I am not a brilliant internet student!!? I have probably not got it right. Be grateful if you could let me know what the next step is
Thank you
Jean Palmer

Dear Editor:
Mr. Duro, you have managed to do it again with your newest venture. Great publication!! It's so good to see you are back as your accomplishments with previous venture (The Crete Gazette) were greatly appreciated. Will there be any future articles on clean up efforts at former Air Force Base which I was stationed at circa Feb 1965 - Aug 1966? I am still attempting to locate friends Sophia and Rose who were waitresses, and Michael who worked in Motor Pool maintenance area and is Sophia's husband.
Extremely pleased to see you have Maria Daskalaki back on board as she always produces excellent articles. And of course you continue to be very much on top of your game, Lou. Many good wishes for continued success!! Many thanks, too.
Walter R. Pearce

Dear Walter:
Thank you for your kind words. The clean-up of the old air base in Gournes will certainly continue to receive coverage in our editorial columns. Hopefully, with the new mayor taking office in January, the efforts to renovate the area will receive a higher priority. And, we too, are delighted with the return of Maria Daskalaki. She is a fine young journalist and we are proud to have her on our staff.
