HIS GOOD DEED
GETS PUNISHED

From his bed in University Hospital, our old friend, Chuck Luffer of Montreal, contacted us to tell his tale of woe. "On my recent holiday on Crete, as I walked down a busy sidewalk in Iraklion, my eyes fell upon one of those unfortunate, homeless vagabonds who are found in every city these days, even here," Chuck said. "Wearing what can only be described as rags, carrying every worldly possession in two plastic bags, my heart was touched by this person's condition."

Chuck told us that some people turned to stare. Others quickly looked away as if the sight would somehow contaminate them. As for him, he couldn't take his eyes off this person.

"Recalling some long ago Sunday School admonition to 'care for the sick, feed the hungry and clothe the naked,' I was moved by some powerful, inner urge to reach out to this poor unfortunate," he said. "A small voice inside my head told me to reach out, reach out . . . . so I did!

Chuck gets out of the hospital in about three months, and he would love to get a card or maybe a visitor, perhaps some kind words to let him know his "good deed" got some recognition.
