Archbishop Eirinaios, the new archbishop of Crete, in his efforts to connect with the island's young people, recently scheduled a visit to the youth center of St. Titos' parish, which is currently celebrating its 27th year of providing much-needed services to Heraklion children.
The Archbishop, who has a simple, familiar and friendly style, as opposed to other “remote” churchmen, mingled with the youngsters and welcomed them as they registered for the various classes and services offered by the center.
“Why do you like coming here?” he asked one kid. “What’s your favorite board game?” he inquired of another, and “In which class are you registered?” he asked some others. After spending time with his new young friends, the Archbishop had a long talk with the parents in the second floor meeting room. Before leaving the youth center, he made it a point to shake everyone's hand, and said a special goodbye to all the kids – leaving behind a warm feeling that he really cares about the welfare of our young people.
The Saint Titos Youth Center, located downtown Heraklion at Number 3 Epimenidou Street, offers a buffet, bookstore, computer lab, lending library, backyard for sport activities and three main rooms. One is a lounge for table tennis and billiards, the second is a reading and game room, and the third – on the second floor – is used for various demonstrations and exhibitions that occasionally take place, as well as for lectures, seminars or projections.
Two other rooms of the second floor are used for the many scheduled classes that are offered every year including: musical instruments (harmonium, guitar, lyre, lute and oblong folk drum); chess; traditional dances; theatre; painting; handicraft; woodcraft; making jewels ; journalism; brainteasers and computers.
These classes are for children of all grades of elementary school, high school and lyceum. It is important to mention that the activities of the youth center are available free of charge to all youngsters, regardless of nationality or religion. And, it also offers adult classes in Greek language, woodcraft and hagiography.
