Honorary Expat of the Month: Jan Verwoerd of the Netherlands, who has a holiday home in Kalo Horio, was in town celebrating his 60th visit to Crete over the last 28 years. Accompanying Jan was his lady friend Juul Versloot…. Holiday in China? Not for Stelios Stiakakis the manager of New China Restaurant in Kato Gouves. Stelios is closing the restaurant for a few weeks while he takes a vacation on good old Crete, visiting different parts of his home island. When he returns at the end of November, the New China will re-open with winter hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays….
Love at first bite: This lovely Irish couple, Juls and Rory, celebrated their holiday on Crete with a candlelight dinner at the Neraida Restaurant in Kokkini Hani. They both work at the world famous Cayenne Restaurant, run by celebrity chef Paul Rankin, in Belfast…. The Flying Dutchman: The Ko-Go Khronicles Frequent Flyer Award goes to Jim van't Land of the Marilisa Hotel in Kokkini Hani. During the past month, Jim has made several round-trips between Crete and Amsterdam, raking up some 5,000 air miles. In winning the award, Jim receives a discount on flights from Heraklion to Hania….
Hot spot: According to our Town Buzz reporter, Makis' Café Bar in Gournes was jumping last week with live music by the talented Hristos and Yorgos. With every drink, cheese pies and spinach pies were served, all homemade by Makis' mom, Costoola. The bar will be closed from Nov. 4 through 20, but the live music will continue throughout the winter every other Friday night…. Speaking of "hot spots," the Bull Pub in Kato Gouves features live mellow rock music every Thursday night all year long….
One too many?? Hetty Kerkhof of Holland, shared a raki (or two, or three, or . . .) with Ko-Go staffer Sophia Klidi at Anopoli's Arhontiko Taverna during a recent visit to her favourite island. Perhaps that's why she reported the following story: "We went on a jeep safari and stopped for lunch in a small taverna in an old mountain village. Having to relieve myself (of raki) I was told the toilet was around the back. I found it okay, and it was certainly a lovely bathroom, the best of any taverna I was ever in, set with soap, towels, shampoo – even a small bath. It was only as we were leaving that I spotted the door to the taverna's hole-in-the-wall toilet – and I realized that I had walked into the home next door and peed in a stranger's bathroom!...
Lookey-likey: First we had a fake Hard Rock Café in Hersonissos – now it's a rip-off Lloyds No 1 in Malia. A representative of the popular British pub chain, while on holiday here, spotted the look-alike, which not only reproduced the logo to the last detail on the venue's exterior but inside advertised Curry Club and Steak Club nights, yet more genuine Lloyds innovations. A spokesman for the parent company, JD Wetherspoon, said "we'll probably take a pragmatic view on it for now," but he didn't rule out taking legal action. |
