Welcome to Kokkini: Yurgen Fasen (left) and Erik vander Vlist are the new owners of Nesta Internet and Games Café on the beach in Kokkini Hani. The newcomers are well experienced, and have a similar café back in Amsterdam. In addition, Yurgen is an accomplished chef. We all wish them luck in their new enterprise.
…Those wedding bells: Lovely Julie Kibble of Birmingham made a return visit to Crete to tie the knot with Adrian Shuri, the guy she met when she was here on holiday two years ago. They were married in San Rafael Church in Anopoli, and were joined by her mom, dad, step-dad and friends – all of which flew over for the ceremonies. …This month's trivia – well-aged beer: The oldest commercial brewery in the world is Germany's Bayerische Staatsbrauerei Weihenstephan, having begun in a Benedictine monastery in 1040.
…A family affair: If you've been wondering why Nick and Jean Altobelli of Kokkini Hani have been walking around with big smiles recently, it's because their son, Franco, his wife, Emma, and their one-year-old son, Ben, were in town from England for a visit. The proud grandparents, who paraded little Ben all around town for everyone to see, said it was great having the family here, but it's also nice getting the house back to normal.
…Jim's back in town: Friends of Jim van't Land are breathing a sigh of relief now that he's back where he belongs – at the Marilisa Hotel in Kokkini Hani. Rumours raged rampant throughout September that he had packed up his family, and a container, and headed back to his native Holland, while some new people ran the hotel and pool bar. As it turned out, the rumours were only partially true – his family went back so that his sons could start the new school term in their homeland, and Jim and his wife, Gerda, accompanied them for a couple of weeks. And, in the spring they'll all be back frolicking at the Marilisa. …Cheers: Greece's National Professional Association of Vineyards and Wine reports this year's harvest on Crete is more plentiful than last year’s crop, and the grapes are of good-quality to exceptional. Apparently, Crete's new plan to increase the types of grapes grown in is starting to pay off.
…Potato pals: Christian Bruns, well-known to the readers of this column so we won't run his photo this time, outdid himself with his annual barbeque at his Gouves estate. According to this newspaper's food critic, who attended the gala event, all the "eats" were great, but top rating (three chef's hats) went to the gourmet German potato salad created by the culinary team of Paol (left) and Andreas, who refused to reveal their last names for fear of being inundated by hundreds of recipe seekers.
…More trivia – hold your hats: New Hampshire's Mt. Washington, in the U.S., is renowned for having "the worst weather on Earth." A wind gust of 231 mph in 1934 is still the fastest surface wind speed ever recorded. …It's a girl: Congratulations to Sarah Paolucci and Dr. Stefan Hoeing of Gournes on the birth of their baby girl, Jasmin-Myriam, weighing in at 3,600 grams, or almost eight pounds. …Remember, it's just a loan! Greece has agreed to loan London’s British Museum a collection of priceless Minoan-era antiquities for an up-coming exhibition. Among the antiquities to go on display will be the renowned bull-leaping frescoes from our Minoan palace of Knossos, currently housed in the Iraklion museum. But, we want 'em back!!! |
